Partnership with Temple University takes off

The Temple University—Sebastian Kolowa University College (SEKUCo) partnership was established in April 2011, following a visit to Temple University by SEKUCo Provost, Rev. Dr. Anneth Munga, in April - May 2010. Through this exchange partnership, up to two (2) SEKUCo students can be nominated by SEKUCo to study full-time at Temple University for a maximum of one year. Selection criteria are established by SEKUCo, though all nominated students must demonstrate sufficient English language skills for successful academic engagement at Temple University. For the Academic Year 2012/2013, SEKUCo students Elia Sakumba and Godfrey Moses Shechambo have been nominated to study at Temple University. We are looking forward to a successful year at Temple University by both Mr. Sakumba and Mr. Shechambo and believe that the relationship between the two higher learning institutions will be strengthened.

Mrs. Cecilia Warue Kabuchoru is no more

DEMISE

cecilia _warue _kabuchoru

With deep sadness, I hereby inform you that one of our Assistant Lecturers

Mrs. Cecilia Warue Kabuchoru

has died. She passed away in Nairobi on Friday 25th November 2011, at 10 p.m.

Cecilia joined SEKUCo on 1st October 2011 as a specialist in the field of Hearing Impairments. She began her teaching duties as soon as we opened the university college. A week ago, she went to Jamaa Hospital in Nairobi where she was to be treated for her foot problem. She visited the hospital and received treatment on Tuesday and Thursday. On Friday, Cecilia was in good health but in the evening her condition worsened drastically. As she was being rushed to hospital, Cecilia passed away.

According to Cecilia’s husband, Robinson Kabuchoru, the last words our colleague and teacher uttered before she gave up the spirit were: “God, if I am to die, forgive me all my sins!”

Peace be with you!

Rev. Dr. Anneth Munga

NOTICE TO ALL FRIENDS OF SEKUCo

shechambo

Dr. Fanuel Shechambo.

1951-2011.

With great sadness, I hereby inform you that a beloved brother and colleague, the Deputy Provost for Administration (DPA) and Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Fanuel Christopher Shechambo, has died.

Dr. Shechambo came to SEKUCo in June 2008 and became the first DPA of our university college. Two months later, the SEKUCo Governing Board appointed him to the position of Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs (DPAA). He held that position until May 2010. On 1st of June 2010 the Governing Board decided to return him to the post of Deputy Provost for Administration. He was also assigned to act as Dean of Faculty of Science.

During the last month, Dr. Shechambo’s health has been unsteady. This was mainly caused by complications arising from diabetes, an illness which he has had for many years. On 15th April 2011, his health weakened significantly. At midnight he was taken to Lushoto District Hospital where he was being treated until his death which occurred on Saturday, 16th April 2011, at 9.30 a.m.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to all of you. Also, I thank you for the overwhelming support which you have extended to Dr. Shechambo’s wife and our colleague, Mama Dorothy Shechambo, and her family.

The funeral will be held at Mlalo village on Tuesday 19th April 2011. To mark SEKUCo’s participation, a Farewell Service will be held at 9.00 a.m. in the Assembly Hall before transporting Dr. Shechambo’s body to Mlalo.

The morning he died, Dr. Shechambo prayed as follows:

The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul; he leads me in the paths of righteousness

For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil; for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil;

My cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;

And I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

(Psalm 23)

Yours sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Anneth Munga

Institute For Diaconical Studies

Short Report on the First Meeting of the Board of Institute for Diaconical Studies (Taasisi ya Mafunzo ya Diakonia)

The Board of the recently established Institute for Diaconical Studies met at Magamba, 19.01.2011.  Three representatives of the NED and four of SEKUCo were present.  After receiving some explanations concerning the composition of the Board and the establishment of the Institute through the chairperson, the members discussed the main aims of the Institute as presented by the Director of the Institute.  The Board commended SEKUCo for establishing the Institute and resolved that:

  1. It is necessary to improve Diaconical teaching for coworkers of different levels (e.g. University students, pastors, other coworkers in the parishes, etc)
  2. It is important to get in touch with all those being involved in Social Welfare in the region in order to get an overview what is really done, what is missing and why, what is planned by whom and to evaluate the work on the whole.
  3. It is necessary to start with changing the thinking and the attitude of both the coworkers and the people who are in need.
  4. The emphasis on Diaconia should always be to enable people to become the subjects of their own life and to empower them even if they have to live with limitations.  But it is equally necessary to be with those, who do not or no longer have any strength.
  5. A special program to study Diaconia for the coworkers should be started including further education and pastoral care.
  6. With regard to SEKUCo Diaconia should be part of the Course of Foundation of Faith and Ethics, which cuts across all Faculties so that all students should get at least an introduction in the meaning and importance of Diaconia.  They should be encouraged to study Diaconia as Optional Elective Course.
  7. Already some students do voluntary work at Irente Childrens’ Orphanage.  It was resolved that the leadership of the College should inform the student body that the Institute for Diaconical Studies has been established and to invite those interested to register themselves and participate in voluntary work.

All members of the Board agreed that change in thinking has to start in ourselves and that a common effort is necessary in order to emphasize the importance of Diaconia within the Church, the government and the society as a whole including local communities.
